Welcome to the African Wanderings experience where I will be sharing learnings, anecdotes, stories and African Wisdom from my over fifty years wandering the continent. I have seen incredible sights and experienced amazing interactions that have shaped my ideas today.
Lately I have also made some incredibe stone age discoveries that are taking up much of my time.
I will be discussing, through the blog and on my YouTube channel, subjects from wildlife to humanity. Aside from the natural wonders of Africa, one of my favourite pastimes is listening to peoples’ stories – and Africa has many.
I have found solace, and excitement, in scratching through beach detritus, scrambling through dense underbrush to photograph an insect and in listening to stories of humanity. All my life I have listened but seldom judged. I have listened to scientists and drunkards, drifters and statesmen – and taken all these interactions as life lessons.
My interest in the story of humanity will come through strongly in my writings and videos. From the earliest echoes of our species to the present day we have faced defining moments. The discovery of the use of fire, the earliest toolmaking, the first art, consciousness – these were all defining moments.
We are now living in another defining time. How we pull through will not depend on churlish and childish politicians and political and social commentators, but rather on how we maintain our humanness – our respect.
I am planning on publishing three manuscripts later in the year: a collection of wilderness images and thoughts, a collection of children’s stories and the almost unbelievable story of my stone age findings. I have put some of the writings in ebook format. Proceeds will go towards the publications planned.
